What are roof finials?
Roof finials are a decorative ridge tile which typically emphasize the apex of a gable roof or other part of the roof structure. They are used for decoration or to add an architectural feature and can be used for all manner of other applications. They could even be used in the garden and for other ornamental purposes, on a wall for example. The roof finials are hand-thrown and moulded or sculptured in a terracotta clay and are fitted onto a prominent place on the roof to create a roof feature. They come in various shapes, sizes and designs, and are mostly on a base angled ridge tile.
What are the roof finials made of?
The finials are made from wood-fired red earthenware clay fired to 1080°C. The wood-firing gives a warm toasted finishthat may vary from one side to the other, depending on whereabouts in the kiln it has been. Most are slip-decorated and glazed to give colour and texture.
Do the roof finials have to be professionally installed?
No not necessarily, roof finials could be installed by anyone however it is wise to get the job done by a professional who has all of the tools, safety equipment and knowledge required to select the correct fitting and safely install the roof finial. For existing roofs a ridge tile is normally removed and the finial is fitted in place using mortar or a combination of mortar and mechanical fitting.
Can I make a replacement of a finial because yours is broken or you cannot source them anywhere?
It is possible, I will ask you for pictures and measurements of your original piece and then provide you with a no obligation quote based on the information. I can currently preferably only produce replicas when customers can send or deliver the original piece to the workshop so there is an original to work from.
How long do roof finials take to make?
The photographs show the finials that are available. They are despatched within a week of payment being received.
How do I buy roof finials?
The quickest way to place an order and buy a roof finial is by contacting me directly via e-mail or telephone to order any of the finials. I do also accept BACS payment which can be paid via the online banking system (I can e-mail an invoice and further information). Electronic payment means the transaction is quicker and often cuts waiting time but I am happy to discuss alternative methods of payment if required.
How are finials delivered?
All finials are packaged securely in impact resistant foam in strong boxes. Due to the nature of the products they are very well packaged to minimise the chances of them sustaining damage in transit and breakages are extremely rare. Delivery costs are included in the price of all products, except seconds, to UK mainland addresses and I use a courier service to deliver my finials in most cases.
Can I collect finials from you?
Any collections are by appointment only as at this time I have no formal retail premises. Please contact me to discuss times, pricing and collecting any of the products from the workshop.
These have imperfections which relate to either minor blemishes, superficial cracks or slight damage. This is reflected in the reduced price which does NOT include delivery. If in doubt please ask for further details and photos of the nature of the fault. Delivery can be arranged at a cost to be agreed.
